Prayer Plant (Red Maranta) (Maranta leuconeura)
The brown, crispy leaf tips visible in the image are not indicative of an infectious disease but a symptom of environmental stress known as "tip burn." This problem primarily occurs due to low relative humidity in homes or the accumulation of salts and minerals (like chlorine and fluorine) present in tap water. The plant, unable to transpire properly, suffers tissue death in areas furthest from the main hydration channels.
Trim the dry brown parts of the leaves, following their natural shape.
Start using distilled, rainwater, or water left out for 24 hours to avoid chemicals.
Place the pot on a tray with pebbles and water, ensuring no direct contact.
Move the plant away from radiators, air conditioners, or drafts that dry out foliage.
Check that drainage is adequate and the substrate is not compacted.
Keep soil moist, never waterlogged; water 2-3 times weekly in summer.
Bright indirect light; direct sun scorches and fades leaves.
Ideal range 18°C-24°C; avoid cold drafts.
Porous, organic-rich mix with good drainage.
Liquid fertilizer for green plants every 15 days in spring/summer.
