Apical necrosis and dry basal leaves due to abiotic stress

Indoor Yucca (Yucca guatemalensis)

1 casesUrgency: Low

What is it?

The plant shows signs of apical necrosis and basal leaf desiccation. This is not an infectious disease caused by pathogens, but rather abiotic stress related to environmental or watering factors. Dry tips usually appear due to very low ambient humidity or the use of irrigation water with excess chlorine and salts. On the other hand, the loss of lower leaves is a natural aging process, although it can be accelerated by excessively prolonged drought periods.

Step-by-step treatment plan

1

Remove dry leaves

immediate

Manually remove all completely brown leaves from the base to improve aesthetics and health.

2

Trim tips

1-3 days

Cut necrotic areas of the tips with disinfected scissors, leaving a millimeter of dry edge.

3

Controlled hydration

immediate

If the substrate is completely dry and separated from the pot walls, perform a deep watering.

4

Improve humidity

preventive

Occasionally spray water around the plant or use a humidifier if the environment is very dry.

Care during recovery

Watering

Every 10-14 days in summer; let the substrate dry completely between waterings.

Light

Very bright location; tolerates direct sun and very bright partial shade.

Temperature

Ideal between 15°C and 25°C. Avoid frost and cold drafts.

Soil

Very well-draining mix, like universal substrate with 30% perlite or sand.

Fertilizer

Fertilizer for green plants once a month during spring and summer.
